Fantastic museum for the history buffs. I found the train ride very informative
The train ride was really good, you learn a lot about the copper mines
This was a great place to visit with our bus load of families. An activity sheet for the young ones and many high quality displays for the older ones. Allow a few hours at least.
The Moonta Mines Museum and the Moonta Tourist Train go hand in hand if you want to learn about Moonta's past. Both the museum and the tourist train are adjacent to each other approximately 1km from the town centre. It's a fascinating history based on the discovery of copper and the influx of Cornish immigration in the 1800s. We found that a visit to the museum prior to doing the rail trip is the best way to understand what you will see during your rail journey through the mines area (although the train driver does provide a commentary along the way). We stayed at the Port Hughes caravan park and commuted the 3km trip to Moonta by bike along the dedicated bike track.
This is an excellent collection of historical items from the Moonta region. Set up in the old school building the museum covers many years of Cornish life, copper mining, schooling, church life and society. Well worth a visit when you are on the Copper Coast. You can get your train tickets here for the mine tour too.
